The Government of Vorarlberg initiated the Mini-Public on How to Create an Attractive Living Space for Future Generations (Wie können wir für nächste Generationen einen möglichst attraktiven Lebensraum schaffen?) in June 2012. Across 1.5 days, 16 people addressed the question, “How can we [combine] sustainability, satisfaction and deceleration with economic growth?”

Background History and Context

This is the second regional mini-public (Bürgerrat) initiated by the regional government of Vorarlberg, the first being on the topic of ensuring long-term living quality.

Organizing, Supporting, and Funding Entities

The mini-public was initiated by the regional government and professionally facilitated by the Büro für Zukunftsfragen.

Participant Recruitment and Selection

16 people participated in the discussions, selected through a process of sortition. It is unclear which criteria were used to form the representative sample of participants.

After a short expert input, face-to-face discussions began and resulted in consensus-based results.

Influence, Outcomes, and Effects

The mini-public created a set of policy recommendations, which focused on four key topics: (1) politics and disenchantment; (2) education; (3) growth and environment; (4) affordable living. The results and recommendations were then publicly presented in a Citizens’ Café (Bürgercafé) together with head of the regional government (Landeshauptmann). It took place on June 13th 2012 at Löwensaal in Hohenems.
