TheyWorkForYou is an online participatory website intended to promote democratic education and access to governance for UK residents and citizens, by providing information on the votes and policies of Members of Parliament (MPs).

Problems and Purpose

‘Theyworkforyou’ which operates under www.theyworkforyou.com offers access to a diverse set of democratic innovations, thereby promoting participation and democracy in different ways. From voting behaviour to historical and recent debates, the information portrayed is simple to understand. As well, access to the website is made easier by a deliberately user-friendly interface. Theyworkforyou also provides a searchable database of all UK Members of Parliament including a short profile, a portrait picture, and a brief history of their political career.

The voting behaviour section of the website allows one to compare their personal views against their representatives in how they vote on various policies in parliament. This helps the user determine whether they share any common ground with MPs on different policies. Theyworkforyou also offer RSS feeds and a ‘subscribe to your MP’ option where users receive email updates on MP speeches, debates, etc. Finally, the website collects its data from the ‘Hansard’ ensuring users the information supplied to them is from official transcripts.
